No team needed a bye week more than the New York Football Giants. After starting off the season 5-0 SU, they tumbled to four consecutive losses that started with an absolute blowout against New Orleans. Eli Manning, Steve Smith and Brandon Jacobs went from conquering hero’s to questionable characters in just a month, which stands as an eternity in the football timeline.

They still have time to turn things around, especially with the Cowboys and Eagles coming off losses. But they have to try and reclaim their honor while defrauding another team that is a letdown specialist from Atlanta.

Nothing has gone right for Eli and the Giants in terms of sports betting. They haven’t won in four games, and because of that, the Giants have fallen to 1-4 ATS in their last 5 tries. A 1-3-1 ATS home record does nothing to bolster confidence. Even worse, the Giants are winless in the last five times Atlanta has come to town.

A key game in the NFC Wild Card race takes place in New York on Sunday as the New York Giants host the Atlanta Falcons. The Giants have lost four straight after winning their first five games and are coming off a bye while Atlanta lost to Carolina last week.

The Giants had last week off and it was a good time for the bye week. Head coach Tom Coughlin gave his teams some time off and the team has come back ready and focused for Sunday. The Giants are not in bad shape at 5-4 as they trail the Cowboys by only a game in the NFC East. "We knew we weren't in an awful situation," quarterback Eli Manning said. "It's not exactly where we wanted to be, but we knew that there were still a lot of games left, a lot of season and if we went out and handled our business and play well, got hot again and got back to winning some games, we would be very much into the playoff hunt."

The Falcons lost last week 28-19 to Carolina and also lost running back Michael Turner to an injury. He could be out this week for the game against New York. "Whether or not Michael Turner plays or not, they have a style," Coughlin said. "They play the game a certain way. They do rush the football very well."

I don’t know if it’s going to sway you, and if it doesn’t, go with your heart! But this is why I like the Giants this week. The Falcons lost Michael Turner to a sprained ankle, and unless he’s a magic healer (ala Wolverine – yeah, comic book style) or didn’t actually hurt himself that bad (I doubt it, because they needed him bad last week), he’s not going to be playing against the Giants. Slamming Jason Snelling or a less-than-100% Jerious Norwood into an angry Giants defense isn’t the same as Michael Turner.

Atlanta has lost 3 of their last 4 and is 1-4 on the road this season. What doe New England, Dallas, and New Orleans have in common? Ooo, I know, they all beat Atlanta this year. Ooo, and one more thing, they all have winning records. Yes, the Falcons are 0-3 against teams with winning records this season.

“That would never be a bad thing,” Chiefs coach Todd Haley said of the Steelers. “This has been a long time in the making for the Pittsburgh Steelers. Pittsburgh (6-3) survived an early test in their 2009 calendar, picking up a home win over Minnesota on October 25 before defeating Denver on the road on November 9 following a bye week.

That 28-10 victory over the Broncos gave the Steelers a five- game winning streak in which they scored at least 27 points in each contest. Pittsburgh then returned to divisional play last Sunday and dropped an 18-12 game to Cincinnati, a contest in which defense and special teams trumped offense.

The Steelers did not allow an offensive touchdown in their loss to the Bengals, but did watch returner Bernard Scott take a kickoff 96 yards for a first-quarter score that was the game's only touchdown.

Pittsburgh, meanwhile, went 0-for-4 in the red zone and had to settle for four field goals by kicker Jeff Reed. The Steelers also lost safety Troy Polamalu early in the game to a PCL strain in his left knee, the same one that caused him to miss four games earlier this season. Steelers head coach Mike Tomlin declared his starting safety "questionable at best" for this contest.

The Steelers had an eight-game home win streak snapped and fell a game behind the 7-2 Bengals in the division. Pittsburgh also lost both of its meetings with Cincinnati this year, giving the Bengals the all-important tie-break between the clubs.

Pittsburgh will try to keep the pressure on Cincinnati with a favorable four- game stretch. After this Sunday's battle, the Steelers play in Baltimore, host Oakland and then play at Cleveland. The Ravens represent the toughest matchup of the bunch, as the Chiefs, Raiders and Browns are a combined 5-22 this season.

The Chiefs (2-7) will be looking for the upset with a new-look offense. Last Sunday's 16-10 victory over the Raiders was their first since releasing starting running back Larry Johnson, who had originally earned a one-game suspension for off-the-field remarks about head coach Todd Haley on Twitter, as well as some anti-gay slurs on the website.

The offense took another hit on Tuesday, when the team confirmed that wide receiver Dwayne Bowe was suspended for four games for violating the NFL's policy on performance enhancing substances. Bowe had made six catches for 91 yards in the win over Oakland.

Jamaal Charles, starting in place of Johnson, added 103 yards on 18 carries with a touchdown against the Raiders.

Kansas City, which has picked up both of its wins this season in its last four games, will be looking to halt a 10-game home losing streak this Sunday. The Chiefs haven't won at Arrowhead Stadium since September 28 of last season and have gone 0-4 as the host this year.

Forget history, because this is Brett Favre’s Vikings team, and this is his first year running this show. Forget that this is Seattle’s biggest underdog spread all year long, because this is the best team the Hawks have played all year long. Also, Seattle has been a big dog (9 points or more) three times this season. What’s their record in those 3 games? 0-3 straight up and against the spread. They were beaten by 11 in Arizona last week despite going up 14-0 in the first quarter. They were beaten by 21 in Dallas. And the Colts slapped them around by 17 in Indy as a 10 point favorite.

Could the Vikings have a let down? Sure. It’s possible. And the Vikings have shown some open alleys in that secondary. But should Seattle be able to give Matt Hasselbeck the time he needs with that offensive line against that defensive front? Should the most physical running back in the NFL have trouble against a defense that really struggles to tackle physical runners? Should Brett Favre give the Hawks a pity win like he gave Michael Strahan a pity sack back in the day? That answer is NO! To all those questions.

A losing season is now out of the equation for the 2009 Minnesota Vikings, not that such a notion had ever really entered this talented team's scope.

Of course, Minnesota's 27-10 win over the hapless, one-win Detroit Lions last Sunday - a victory that moved the Vikes to 8-1 - didn't exactly look like the culmination of anything for Brad Childress' team. Far from it, in fact.

This Sunday, when the Seattle Seahawks invade the Hubert H. Humphrey Metrodome, the Vikes will try to offer up a crisper display.

Despite dominating the first-half statistics, a trend that would continue throughout the second half, the Vikings found themselves in a 10-3 dogfight with Detroit at halftime.

A pair of lost fumbles for Adrian Peterson and a turnover on downs among the Vikings' first six drives were the culprit in devaluing the Vikings' 302-125 advantage in first-half yards.

Minnesota created some distance in the second half, ending much of the suspense when Peterson answered a fumble by the Lions' Kevin Smith with 28 yards on two rushes, including a 1-yard touchdown in the first minute of the third quarter, but it was still far from a perfect march to victory for the Vikings.

Minnesota incurred seven penalties for 46 yards over the final 30 minutes, shooting itself in the foot in a way that might get the Purple beaten by a more capable opponent.

1. A good Packers' run defense

If the Packers’ run defense is as good as advertised, it could be the defining factor today.

San Francisco wants to play a close, low-scoring game, and to do that it will give the ball to halfback Frank Gore (5.2 yards per carry) to shorten the game, grind out some first downs and set up play-action passes.

The Packers’ rank No. 4 in the NFL in fewest rushing yards allowed per game and per carry, and if defensive coordinator Dom Capers can neutralize Gore, the 49ers will become one dimensional without many weapons — quarterback Alex Smith has a 79.5 passer rating and put up only 10 points in a win over Chicago last week.

2. Stopping LB Patrick Willis

San Francisco has an emerging defensive star in middle linebacker Patrick Willis, who in his third season might be the best player in the league at his position.

He can ruin a running game almost single-handedly, and if he’s dominant, and especially if he creates a turnover or two, the 49ers have a good chance at creating the kind of grind-it-out game they would have a chance to win.

3. Aaron Kampman vs. Adam Snyder

The Packers might have an especially favorable matchup with left outside linebacker Aaron Kampman against 49ers right tackle Adam Snyder.

Led by veteran cornerbacks Charles Woodson and Al Harris, the Packers have one of the league's best pass defenses. They are fourth in the NFL with 13 interceptions and eighth overall in pass defense. Smith is known for his carelessness with the ball, but he can't force the ball against Green Bay's savvy secondary.

San Francisco's defense feeds off Willis' inspired play at the middle linebacker spot. He figures to have an even bigger impact this week, given how often the Packers work the middle of the field in the passing game. His ability to make a momentum-changing play or two could give the Niners the boost they need to win on the road.

The New York Jets have picked a fantastic time to completely fall apart.

After they won the Super Bowl in week two, the Jets were able to win their next game against the hapless Tennessee Titans, but followed that up with losses in five of their next six games. Their only AFC East win this season was their Super Bowl victory over the Patriots in week two.

Coming into this week's game against the Patriots, Rex Ryan decided to try motivating his troops by acting like a 40 year old woman who just finished watching Beaches. Hey, you'd cry too if your vaunted defense just blew another late game lead, this time against the Jacksonville Jaguars.

Darrelle Revis, the Jets' best cornerback, is more interested in convincing everyone that he single handedly took Randy Moss out of the game in week two than he is in the Jets, this weeks game against the Patriots, or anything else (apparently).

Did he have safety help over the top most of the night? Probably. Did he win some individual battles against Randy Moss? Definitely. Did he have a better game than Randy Moss? Absolutely.



Sammy Morris isn't exactly Adrian Peterson, but he is someone the coaching staff has faith in. He's a guy who will slam his way into a hole and get you three yards, if they're there.

Has he been healthy last week, the Patriots may have run the ball on third-and-two, making the fourth-and-two a moot point.

Morris hasn't seen any action since hurting his knee in week six. He's missed the last three games. The Patriots are 2-1 in those games, but it's clear the Patriots offense misses having a running back it trusts in short yardage situations and the red zone.

Should Morris return, the Patriots will be as healthy at running back as they've been since the Atlanta game, with Fred Taylor being the lone remaining injured back.

Getting Morris back might take some of the heat off of Laurence Maroney. Maroney had his first lost fumble of the season last week at the most inopportune time, giving up the ball in the end zone and costing his team a touchdown.

New England fans have an irrational dislike for Maroney, and anything that takes the focus off him in is probably a good thing.

In this case for the Cincinnati Bengals, re-energized running back Cedric Benson's injured hip prompted the current AFC North leaders to sign mercurial running back Larry Johnson this week as a precautionary measure. Many speculated the head-scratching move will spoil the karma in Cincinnati, which will find out soon enough when it visits the Oakland Raiders this Sunday.

Benson has been limited in practice this week, but says the injury is nothing serious. The team apparently didn't think so and added Johnson to a backfield that also contains Bernard Scott and Brian Leonard. Johnson practiced with the team for the first time on Wednesday and could see action against the Raiders if Benson is unable to continue his recent success this week.

Johnson is very familiar with the Raiders after playing his first seven years in Kansas City. He owns 938 yards and 11 touchdowns in 10 career games versus Oakland, and was signed eight days after the Chiefs released him following his second suspension in 12 months. Johnson was recently suspended for two weeks after ripping Chiefs head coach Todd Haley and posting a homosexual slur on his Twitter account.

Much like Johnson, Benson was signed to a one-year deal last season by the Bengals after a tumultuous few years in Chicago. Since then Benson has rejuvenated his career in the Queen City and is currently sixth in the NFL in rushing with 859 yards. He had only 22 yards on seven carries last week in Pittsburgh, however, before sustaining his injury.

"I'm not saying that it can't happen, I'm not saying that it will happen, but stay tuned," Bengals coach Marvin Lewis said of RB Larry Johnson who would like to get back in the game as quickly as possible after nursing a strained hip. "He'd like to play, I know that. And we'll see what happens as we go through the week, as I said earlier, regarding Cedric with his injury."
